Recognition of a Christian Philosopher to Islam (Hasrul)

Normally when we say we are Muslim, mostly because we are living in Islamic environment or in other words, we live in Muslim majority country. Beside, we can’t also deny that most of us are Muslims through inheritance from our parents who were Muslims as well. This paper is talking about the people who were Christians but admitting there is a religion superior to Christianity-
 .
After reading Murthada Muthahari’s book “Islam and Pluralism”. I am interested in a particular chapter of his book. That chapter describes about recognition of a Christian philosopher to Islam. He is Descartes. Descartes is one of the greatest philosopher in entire world who was farnous with his thesis “I think, therefore I exist”. In his biography, it was written about his philosophy of doubt, he doubted all that he knew and began from zero.

In that book, after proving his own existence he proved the spirit, and God became definite for him. Finally he chose Christian as his religion because it was the official religion in his country. Even though he was a Christian, he did not acknowledge Christianity as the best religion at the time. He also said “I do not say that Christianity is definitely the best religion in the entire world; perhaps there is a religion in other parts of the world that is superior to Christianity”. Incidentally, he mentions Iran as an. However, most Iranian is Muslim. So I conclude that it was his implicit remark of Islam.

To sum up, the writer is challenging the readers who are Muslim to acknowledge Islam as the truest or the best religion ever existed. We should also be jealous to people who are not Muslim but behave more like Muslim than Muslim ourselves.
